Company of Birds
These pieces emerged over 2020-2021. All made on my local beach, Castle Cove and Sandsfoot in Portland Harbour, Dorset. These creatures made themselves known to me. They were about their business as I was about mine. I grew to understand their rhythms and preferences. I’ve never heard terns call to each other without human noise interference across an empty harbour. It only happened in the first ‘lockdown’ during which the world really quietened. Sandsfoot clay and grit are readily available- greys, ocres and reds… especially ready for use after rain. These materials- together with beach sand and debris are integrated with gouache and watercolour.
